Insider Review: W Verbier

Chadner Navarro stays at W Verbier.

City Meets the Mountains
W is known for bringing its sexy, urban aesthetic its properties and Verbier, its first alpine and ski retreat, is no exception. Its designers, Dutch firm Concrete Architectural Associates, injected the four wood chalet-style buildings with as much local influences as possible. There are so many massive windows that you won’t forget that you’re in the middle of the Alps, as you have breakfast looking out to a mountain where soon-to-be teenage Olympians are shredding.

Two-time Michelin-starred Spanish chef Sergi Arola oversees the kitchens, ensuring a confluence of Swiss and Spanish food is championed. Fine dining venue Arola has plenty of those mountain views the property can’t get enough of, making every dining experience atmospheric. The menu’s Spanish origins encourage guests to share plates, from Spanish rice topped with octopus and pork to just-salty-enough slow-cooked slices of Iberian ham. The Swiss side of the menu features clever takes on local ingredients like venison, served tataki-style. The basement-level Eat-Hola Tapas Bar is quintessential W: Stark black-and-white design with a nightlife vibe, plus easy-to-snack on plates of international flavors. Cooking classes are available, too.

Winter Wonderland
You’ve come to come to Verbier to ski (or snowboard), and the W is positioned to make all your mountain dreams come true. The ski concierge will not only store your gear after your run, but also provide the W lift passes (the only hotel in Verbier to do so) to shorten waiting time, or get you set up for cold weather adventures such as heli-skiing and dog sledding. In true W fashion, you can ski into the property’s al fresco apres-ski bar, Off Piste. When it’s time to rest your weary bones, their AWAY® Spa specializes in relaxing, transformative treatments targeting season-specific issues such as the Skiers Stretch Massage or the Mogul Leg Pump.

The design-forward W Verbier is truly the gateway to this chic mountain town’s wealth of activities, from the inside out. What makes this W a great fit for Verbier is that this town loves all things stylish and trendy. There’s a handful of happening bars and lounges on the mountain, and one woman can set you up: Monica Lopes. The hotel’s designated Insider used to work for the Verbier tourism office, making her perfect for the job.

Off-season rates start at 250 CHF.
